Hoffman Spam Index

I used to think I get loads and loads of spam (I define spam as something I did not sign up for and not sent to me by a friend or colleague and not something sent individually to me.   SPAM is an email message generated usually to thousands of people).  I don't get too much though.  I  get around 80 utterly spammed messages a week.  No big deal -- I used to just hit the delete key.

Recently I have begun tallying the spam I get into the Hoffman spam Index because I wanted to know what types of spam I am getting.

Hoffman Spam Index:

Week Spams
7/19/98-7/25/98 77
7/12/98-7/18/98 105
7/5/98-7/11/98 89
6/29/98-7/4/98 72
6/21/98-6/28/98 87
6/14/98-6/20/98 118
6/7/98-6/13/98 93
5/31/98-6/6/98 77
5/24/98-5/30/98 68
5/17/98-5/23/98 78
5/10/98-5/16/98 94
5/3/98-5/9/98 69
4/25/98-5/2/98 87

Hoffman Spam Subject Index:

Subject Spams Percent
Mailing Lists 247 26.9%
Income Opportunities 188 20.5%
Products and Services 123 13.4%
Press Releases 103 11.2%
Marketing and Spam for Spam 102 11.1%
Sex 43 4.7%
Technical Services 38 4.1%
Web Sites Promotion 36 3.9%
Random 39 4.2%
TOTAL 919

Before I actually started tabulating my spam, I always thought I received an extremely high volume of sex related spam.  Maybe because it annoyed me so much.  But sex related spam only accounts for 4.7% of my spam.

I could decrease my spam significantly if I could just unsubscribe from all those mailing lists that I get from so many web sites and products.  But most of these web sites make it inordinately hard to unsubscribe -- so I just filter their e-mails.
